Living with Dignity and Hope
Understanding who you really are makes all the difference
Sub-Saharan Africa has one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS in the world, with 76% of the people in some communities infected with the virus. But it is not just Africa that is experiencing escalating rates of disease. All over the world one hears about growing numbers of people – increasingly younger – who have been diagnosed with cancer, autoimmune, idiopathic or other degenerative diseases.
Hospital staff report that many patients die in disillusionment, alone, anguished, hopeless and expressing a loss of dignity because of their intense identification of themselves as their sick body.
Brahma Kumaris, as a spiritual teaching organisation and registered South African NPO, recognised the need for a programme that specifically supports individuals living with serious or terminal illnesses. Living with Dignity and Hope was born as a result.
This experiential programme teaches, amongst others, that human beings are, essentially spiritual beings, and that the spirit or soul is eternal. Realising this brings great relief to many patients who start withdrawing their attention from their physical body and start doing the work of understanding the true nature of their being and their relationship with God.
